Aan de vooravond van de Tweede Nationale Mars in Washington voor de rechten van lesbiennes en homo's in 1987 bereiden overlevende families en vrienden van mensen die aan AIDS zijn gestorven panelen voor die kunnen worden toegevoegd aan een grootschalig herdenkingsquiltproject. Vanuit de zee van herdachte namen concentreert regisseur Robert Epstein zich op de levens van zes mensen. Naast de aangeboden intieme profielen, door middel van nieuwsbeelden en interviews, plaatst Epstein de AIDS-crisis in de bredere context van de sociale en overheidsreactie op de ziekte.
